Members of Congress Express Concerns About Human Rights in Egypt

December 12, 2018

Washington, D.C. - Reps. James P. McGovern (D-MA) and Randy Hultgren (R-IL), Co-Chairs of the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission, joined 44 other Members of Congress in writing to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to express their concerns regarding the human rights situation in Egypt. The letter, released today, argues that the Egyptian government's approach to human rights, in addition to repressing Egyptian freedoms and contravening American values, will have an unintended but harmful effect on Egypt's security. Specific concerns include the ongoing persecution of American NGO workers in Egypt, and the arbitrary detention and imprisonment of U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents with significant ties to the United States.

The signed letter is available here.
