June 22, 2017

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Co-Chairs James P. McGovern and Randy Hultgren, and 19 other members of the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission, were among the 37 Members of Congress who wrote to President Trump yesterday to urge him to quickly name the Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues. The position was created by Congress in 2002 with a mandate to promote the preservation of Tibet's unique religious, cultural, linguistic and national identity and the equal protection of the human rights of Tibetans in China.

McGovern, Co-Chairs of the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission, issued the following statement to mark World Refugee Day, observed on June 20th every year as a time to remember the millions of people around the world who have been forced to flee their home countries because of conflict and persecution.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today the Commission Co-Chairs, Randy Hultgren and James P. McGovern, released a letter to President Donald J. Trump encouraging him to continue United States membership and engagement in the United Nations Human Rights Council. The Co-Chairs recognize the Council has been inconsistent in its promotion of human rights, but they believe the United States can best defend universal rights by working to strengthen the Council from within.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today the Co-Chairs of the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission and 38 other Members of Congress wrote to Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to call for accountability for the attacks on protesters carried out by the security detail of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's during his recent trip to Washington.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Reps. Randy Hultgren and James P. McGovern, Co-Chairs of the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission, together with the Co-Chairs of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, today asked President Trump to raise the cases of nine American prisoners and a jailed Turkish national during his upcoming meeting with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey. All ten were detained and imprisoned on what appear to be false charges.

Trump urging him to prioritize human rights issues in his upcoming meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The Co-Chairs noted that United States leadership on human rights has long been a beacon to the world, and expressed their hope that President Trump will continue the noble American tradition of standing up for the repressed and the voiceless, which is central to the pursuit of American interests around the globe.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission today honors the lives and sacrifice of two United Nations human rights investigators and their Congolese interpreter whose bodies were found on March 27, 2017.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Representative Randy Hultgren (IL-14) has been named the Republican Co-Chairman of the prestigious bi-partisan Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission, charged with promoting, defending and advocating for international human rights as enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other relevant human rights instruments. The Commission is chaired by two members of the House of Representatives who are appointed by the Speaker of the House and the Minority Leader. Rep. Hultgren served previously on the Commission's eight-member Executive Committee.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Co-Chairs of the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission wrote to Ambassador Cui Tiankai of the People's Republic of China (PRC) to express their deep concern over the demolition of buildings belonging to the Tibetan Buddhist Institute at Larung Gar, and the forced eviction of religious adherents there and at Yachen Gar. Both communities are located in Sichuan province in China.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Co-Chairs Joseph R. Pitts and James P. McGovern, and nine other members of the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission, were among the thirteen Members of Congress who wrote to Dr. Arely Gomez Gonzalez, the Attorney General of Mexico, to express their deep concern over the apparent growing trend of religious intolerance in that country. The congressmen encouraged the Attorney General to investigate, prosecute and sanction those responsible for crimes against religious communities and practitioners.
